As a full-time traveler and content writer, I’ve experienced my fair share of journeys across Southeast Asia. But few trips have left me as awe-inspired as my recent adventure from Phuket to Koh Lanta. This route offers not just a means of getting from point A to B, but a breathtaking voyage through some of Thailand’s most stunning seascapes.

Choosing the Perfect Route

After much deliberation, I opted for a combination of ferry and speedboat to maximize both comfort and scenery. The journey from Phuket to Koh Lanta typically involves a stop at the famous Phi Phi Islands, and I was determined to make the most of this opportunity.

Setting Sail from Phuket

My journey began at Rassada Pier in Phuket, where I boarded an Andaman Wave ferry bound for Phi Phi. I splurged a little on the premium class ticket, which granted me access to an air-conditioned lounge and the coveted open-air top deck.

As we pulled away from Phuket, the morning sun glinted off the Andaman Sea, promising a day of adventure. The ferry moved at a leisurely pace, allowing me to soak in the evolving seascape. About an hour into our journey, the captain announced we were approaching Maya Bay, made famous by the movie “The Beach.” The ferry slowed, giving us all a chance to snap photos of this iconic location.

Phi Phi: A Taste of Paradise

The approach to Phi Phi was nothing short of spectacular. Limestone cliffs jutted dramatically from turquoise waters, their rugged silhouettes softened by lush greenery. It was a view that justified the entire trip.

We docked at Tonsai Pier, and I had cleverly booked my onward journey to allow for a two-hour exploration of Phi Phi Don. While the area around the pier was undeniably touristy, a short walk led me to a picturesque beach where I enjoyed a quick lunch of fresh papaya salad and coconut water.

Speeding to Koh Lanta

For the final leg to Koh Lanta, I switched to a Bundhaya speedboat. The change was a bit tricky – transferring between boats in open water isn’t for the faint-hearted! – but the crew was experienced and helpful.

The speedboat ride was exhilarating. We skimmed across the waves, the wind whipping through my hair as we passed countless small islands. The journey was noisier and bumpier than the ferry, but it offered its own kind of thrill.

Arrival in Koh Lanta

As we approached Saladan Pier in Koh Lanta, the sun was beginning its descent, casting a golden glow over the island. The entire journey had taken about 4 hours, but it felt like I’d traveled through several different worlds.

Looking back, the journey from Phuket to Koh Lanta was so much more than just a transfer. It was an adventure in itself, offering a perfect blend of comfort, excitement, and natural beauty. For anyone planning this trip, I highly recommend taking the time to enjoy the journey. Split your travel between ferry and speedboat if you can, and definitely consider a stop in Phi Phi.

Remember, when island-hopping in Thailand, the journey is just as important as the destination. Happy travels!
